What is Krisp?

Krisp is a desktop audio application that works between a user's microphone, speakers, and calling software. It can remove background noise and background voices in real time, reduce echo or cross-talk, and provide accent conversion. Its AI Meeting Assistant adds recording, transcription, summaries, action items, chat, and other meeting workflows.

Krisp therefore has two privacy and performance profiles. Noise cancellation alone is documented as local on-device processing. Recording and meeting intelligence require audio, transcripts, or derived material to be handled in the cloud. Procurement and participant consent must distinguish those modes rather than treating the product as entirely local or entirely cloud-based.

Live noise and voice cancellation

Install Krisp, select its virtual microphone and speaker in the meeting application, then choose which cleanup features apply. Test with the actual laptop, headset, conferencing service, room, and network. Fan noise, keyboard taps, traffic, nearby conversations, room echo, and a quiet speaker create different failure cases.

Run a controlled call with cleanup on and off. Ask participants to repeat names, numbers, unfamiliar terminology, and sentences with soft consonants. Listen for clipped word beginnings, removed speech, pumping, latency, or a processed tone. Background Voice Cancellation can help when other people are speaking nearby, but it also raises the risk of suppressing an intended secondary speaker.

Keep a fast bypass path. During a customer, medical, legal, financial, or emergency conversation, users must be able to disable a filter that is distorting important information. A clean-sounding call is not useful if the tool removes a dosage, account number, or speaker interruption.

Accent conversion and responsible use

Accent conversion aims to improve intelligibility while preserving the speaker's message. Evaluate it with the people who will use it and the audiences who will hear it. Measure word accuracy, proper names, emotion, latency, and listener comprehension rather than assuming one accent is inherently better.

Voice transformation can affect identity and workplace perception. Make the feature voluntary, explain when it is active, preserve an unmodified path, and do not use accent scores as a proxy for competence. Test languages, dialects, speech disabilities, and code-switching represented in the real workforce. Human feedback and an appeal process matter more than a vendor demo.

Meeting Assistant workflow

Krisp can record without placing a bot in the meeting, generate transcripts and summaries, identify action items, and support later review. This may reduce note-taking, but automation must not become the official record without verification. Correct names, decisions, deadlines, owners, numbers, and sensitive statements against the recording.

Notify participants before capture. Consent requirements differ by jurisdiction, employer policy, customer contract, and meeting topic. Define which meetings may be recorded, who can start recording, who can access and share results, retention, deletion, redaction, and what happens when an external guest objects.

Meeting notes can propagate errors into project trackers, customer systems, or performance reviews. Require an accountable human to approve downstream actions. Keep summaries out of high-consequence workflows until accuracy and access controls have been assessed.

Plans and total cost

The official Krisp pricing page currently presents Core, Advanced, and Enterprise options. Noise cancellation, recording, transcription, and core meeting capabilities are broadly bundled, while accent conversion, storage, team controls, compliance, support, and deployment conditions differ. The FAQ says there is no separate noise-only plan.

Compare cost per active user and meeting, not only the seat price. Include compatible devices, deployment, support, storage, retention, security review, transcription correction, and administration. Determine whether reviewers, contractors, and occasional users require seats and how plan mixing works in a workspace.

Run a pilot during the busiest real working hours. Measure CPU, battery, latency, crash recovery, device conflicts, and the time required to switch between conferencing applications. A plan with generous limits still fails if the virtual device is unreliable on the managed fleet.

Privacy and security boundaries

Krisp's privacy policy says the company does not access or store audiovisual data when only noise cancellation is used. It separately states that Meeting Assistant can store recordings, transcripts, and summaries on its servers. This distinction should be documented in employee and participant guidance.

Review retention, encryption, access, sharing links, deletion, subprocessors, model improvement, regional processing, SSO, audit logs, and enterprise commitments. Meeting content can include customer data, credentials spoken aloud, health information, strategy, or employment decisions. Disable capture where the account configuration and contract do not meet the data classification.

Strengths, limits, and alternatives

Krisp is strongest when live audio conditions are unpredictable and a team wants cleanup across meeting applications. Its meeting features add convenience but move data into a more sensitive cloud workflow.
