What is MarketMuse?

MarketMuse is a content intelligence and planning platform. Instead of starting with “write an article about this keyword,” it inventories the pages and topics already associated with a domain, builds topic models, estimates that site's authority and personalized difficulty, and helps a team choose what to create, update, consolidate, or support with internal links. Research and Optimize applications then guide individual pages, while documents turn analysis into plans and writer briefs.

This distinction is important. MarketMuse is not primarily a one-click publishing engine, and its most useful output is often a decision: do not write this page yet; update an existing URL; build the supporting cluster first; or pursue a topic where the site already has authority. It suits content operations with a meaningful archive more than a new site seeking a handful of article drafts.

MarketMuse is now part of Siteimprove. The June 2026 subscription agreement says Siteimprove acquired MarketMuse and now provides the plans formerly marketed as Optimize, Research, and Strategy. Buyers should therefore evaluate the current Siteimprove contract and DPA, not rely on older MarketMuse ownership or legal summaries.

Inventory, authority, and prioritization

Paid plans include a site inventory that maps page-topic combinations, all known pages, and topics a domain ranks for or wants to track. Saved views help isolate high-authority opportunities, traffic decline, striking-distance pages, topic gaps, and potential quick wins. MarketMuse creates Topic Authority and Personalized Difficulty metrics from the domain's existing coverage and competitive context.

These are prioritization models, not promises. A low personalized difficulty score does not guarantee rank, and a high content score does not establish truth or usefulness. Search outcomes also depend on intent fit, technical indexing, links, reputation, page experience, freshness, product quality, and competitors. Record the recommendation, human rationale, expected outcome, and actual post-publish result so the workflow learns from evidence rather than accepting the score as an objective verdict.

Plans, briefs, and optimization

The official August 2026 pricing table lists Free with one user and 10 queries monthly, but no inventory, tracked topics, briefs, or strategy documents. It includes limited access to Topic Navigator, Keywords, SERP X-ray, SERP Heatmap, Site Heatmap, and Connect.

Optimize lists one site, one user, 100 tracked topics, 100 queries, five article briefs, and one strategy document monthly. Research lists one site, three users, 1,000 tracked topics, unlimited queries, 10 article briefs, and three strategy documents. Strategy lists one site, five users, 10,000 tracked topics, unlimited queries, 20 briefs, all nine brief types, and five strategy documents. Dollar amounts are not shown in current crawlable pricing text; each paid tier directs prospects toward a demo or trial.

A MarketMuse query is charged every time a focus topic and optional URL is run in an application, even if the topic repeats. Tracked-topic limits belong to the account and can be expanded. Paid plans also have monthly document allowances, with add-ons available. Forecast queries, tracked topics, briefs, strategy documents, users, and extra sites separately rather than comparing only plan names.

Briefs cover new or existing content and may include an executive summary, suggested structure, related topics, questions, intent, links, competing coverage, and target content score. Strategy unlocks specialized formats such as comparison, FAQ, how-to, product review, listicle, guide, local, and news. Writers should treat these as researched blueprints, then add first-hand experience, cited sources, original data, precise claims, and editorial judgment.

Privacy, customer data, and AI features

Siteimprove's current terms say customer data remains the customer's property, is not resold, and is processed under a non-exclusive right solely to deliver the service. Customers must export available data before termination; Siteimprove does not promise a unified or comprehensive export across every module. Aggregated anonymous usage data belongs to Siteimprove and may be used for business purposes. The incorporated global DPA governs personal-data processing.

AI features are powered by third parties including OpenAI and Amazon Bedrock, requiring customer data transmission to those providers. The agreement makes the customer responsible for rights and consent, explicitly says customer data submitted to AI features must not include personal data, and requires human review of probabilistic output. That is a material operational rule: remove personal information from briefs, drafts, URLs behind login, and uploaded materials before using AI functions.

The public privacy page covers the marketing website and states that U.S.-based tracking and analysis may involve transfers outside the EEA. It lists behavioral analytics and session replay, including Microsoft Clarity, and says stored web log files are normally erased within 30 days. Product buyers should prioritize the Siteimprove DPA and order, ask about model retention and training, tenant isolation, regions, deletion, access controls, private-site crawling, incident terms, and security attestations.

Editorial safeguards and verdict

Use MarketMuse to narrow decisions, not to manufacture search-shaped prose. Before publishing, verify every statistic and claim against primary sources, confirm that the page uniquely satisfies intent, review internal links for usefulness, and test whether suggested subtopics add information rather than repetition. After launch, monitor indexing, qualified traffic, engagement, conversions, citations, and content decay; a content score alone is not the success metric.

MarketMuse is a strong fit for mature content teams that need inventory-aware planning and standardized briefs. Its value comes from allocating limited editorial capacity more intelligently. A pilot should compare recommendations with the team's existing backlog, measure briefing and editing time, track query and document use, and judge improvements in accepted content and business outcomes—not the volume of generated words.

Strengths

  • Combines automated site inventory with topic models, personalized authority and difficulty, prioritization, planning, briefs, and optimization
  • Briefs include research, related topics, questions, internal linking, structure, and formats such as article, comparison, review, FAQ, how-to, and guide
  • Current Siteimprove terms keep customer data with the customer and limit its use to providing the service, while incorporating a formal DPA

Limitations

  • Paid subscription prices are not published in crawlable current pricing text, so plan comparison requires a sales quote
  • Queries, tracked topics, documents, briefs, sites, and users are separate capacity dimensions that can make the effective cost difficult to forecast
  • Scores and topic recommendations are decision inputs, not evidence of factual accuracy, helpfulness, future ranking, or traffic gain

Best for

  • Publishers, agencies, and content teams with enough existing pages to benefit from inventory-level prioritization
  • Editors who need repeatable research briefs and a defensible create-versus-update roadmap
  • Teams willing to combine proprietary subject expertise, source verification, analytics, and human editing with platform recommendations

Not ideal for

  • A small site that only needs occasional keyword research or a simple drafting assistant
  • Treating a content score, modeled authority, or competitor pattern as a substitute for first-hand expertise and original evidence
  • Sending personal data into AI features, which the June 2026 Siteimprove terms explicitly assign customers responsibility to avoid

Frequently asked questions

Is MarketMuse free?

A Free tier lists one user and 10 queries per month, with Topic Navigator, keyword and SERP tools, Site Heatmap, and Connect. It excludes site inventory, tracked topics, content briefs, and strategy documents.

What is a MarketMuse query?

A query is consumed whenever a focus topic, and optionally a URL, is run in an application. Running the same topic again counts again; saved snapshots can reduce unnecessary reruns.

Who owns MarketMuse now?

Siteimprove acquired MarketMuse. Effective June 30, 2026, Siteimprove's subscription agreement governs plans formerly sold by MarketMuse as Optimize, Research, and Strategy.
