What is Lexis+ with Protégé?
Lexis+ with Protégé is LexisNexis's legal AI workspace for research, drafting, document analysis, and repeatable legal workflows. It was called Lexis+ AI until February 2026, so the old name remains a useful search term, but current procurement and documentation should identify the actual Protégé package.
The product combines the Lexis+ research platform with Protégé, a conversational and agentic assistant. Users can research against primary law, LexisNexis secondary material and Practical Guidance; draft and revise legal documents; summarize and compare uploaded files; generate timelines; work from organization knowledge; and use prebuilt or custom multi-step workflows. Optional web and news sources broaden context, while connectors can bring in iManage, NetDocuments, SharePoint, Microsoft 365, and other repositories.
This breadth is valuable, but it also means “Lexis+ with Protégé” is not one fixed feature bundle. Content collections, jurisdictions, models, connectors, Vault capacity, advanced controls, and availability can differ by market and order form.
Research, drafting, and citation verification
Protégé can answer conversational legal questions and generate drafts grounded in selected sources. For litigation, that may include motions, complaints, discovery requests, deposition outlines, or client communications. Transactional workflows can review agreements, compare provisions, identify inconsistencies, and draft from firm templates or playbooks.
Shepard's remains the important differentiator. Traditional Shepard's reports show later treatment, history, signals, and citing references. Brief Analysis extracts citations from uploaded DOC, DOCX, PDF, or TXT files, displays signals and At Risk warnings, recommends authorities, and checks whether quotations match a cited primary source. Coverage is not universal: official help says some materials and jurisdictions have limited or no Shepard's report.
The 2026 platform update adds Shepard's Verify Trust Markers intended to confirm that cited authority exists and can be retrieved. That is narrower than proving the surrounding sentence is accurate. Reviewers still need to open the source, inspect the pin cite and quoted language, confirm precedential status and jurisdiction, check current law, distinguish dicta, and decide whether the authority supports the proposition and facts.
Vault, organization knowledge, and agents
Vault stores matter documents so users can ask questions, build chronologies, compare files, and draft with source links. Current 2026 release material describes a reimagined Vault supporting as many as 100,000 documents and multimodal files, with outputs linking to exact passages, spreadsheet rows, images, or timestamps. An older FAQ on the product page still describes 50 Vaults with 1–500 documents each, session uploads of up to ten purged at session end, and conversation results retained for 90 days.
Those statements likely reflect different generations, packages, or rollout states; do not assume the largest limit or a particular purge rule. Put maximum files, file types, OCR, per-file size, result history, deletion, backups, legal hold, export, and regional storage in the pilot checklist and contract.
Agent skills, a workflow library, and a custom workflow builder can turn research and review instructions into repeatable sequences. Approving a plan before execution improves visibility, but automation can also repeat a bad assumption at scale. Require named owners, bounded data sources, checkpoints before external actions, citation gates, versioned templates, and audit logs.
Pricing and contract scope
LexisNexis publishes no standard self-service price for Lexis+ with Protégé. Its FAQ says pricing depends on organization size, practice areas, jurisdictions, premium content and analytics, users, and selected features. Small firms may see Lexis+ offers in an online store, while larger firms, departments, and government buyers contact sales. A Lexis+ package is not automatically evidence that Protégé, Vault, a particular connector, or a usage allowance is included.
Ask for a line-item proposal covering base content, excluded libraries, AI users, query or document limits, Vault capacity, DMS and Microsoft integrations, model access, workflow builder, mobile access, BYOK, SSO/SCIM, support, implementation, data migration, training, minimum term, price increases, renewal, termination export, and taxes. Benchmark total cost against accepted work product, review time, research completeness, and avoided duplicate systems—not prompt volume alone.
Confidentiality, privilege, and security
LexisNexis says customer data is not used to train AI models, that identifiable information is removed from AI interactions used to improve performance, and that the service applies encryption, privacy-by-design controls, enterprise providers, audits, and the RELX Responsible AI framework. The 2026 release also describes BYOK for enterprise and government customers using common cloud key-management services.
Marketing summaries are not a substitute for the operative agreement. Before privileged or restricted material is uploaded, review the DPA, confidentiality terms, subprocessors and model providers, data locations, retention for every feature, deletion and backups, support access, incident notice, audit evidence, legal process, business continuity, connector permissions, and whether product-improvement telemetry is truly de-identified for your risk model.
Apply matter-level controls. Separate public research from client documents, block especially sensitive classes until approved, restrict Vault and DMS access by matter, prevent cross-client retrieval, test ethical walls, review external sharing, and document attorney supervision. A connector can expose more material than a manual upload, while a generated summary may reveal privilege even if the original file remains controlled.
Evaluation plan
Run a representative, blinded pilot. Include straightforward and difficult questions, adverse authority, ambiguous jurisdiction, recent changes, long exhibits, poor scans, spreadsheets, competing contract versions, and prompts designed to expose unsupported assumptions. Record source completeness, citation and quote accuracy, missed counterauthority, review time, correction rate, acceptable-output rate, privilege handling, access boundaries, and deletion behavior.
For every output, require the reviewer to open cited material and validate jurisdiction, date, treatment, pin cites, quotations, procedural posture, facts, and conclusion. Test both legal-source mode and any general web or model mode, because their evidence and data pathways can differ. Do not let an impressive draft bypass ordinary conflicts, confidentiality, competence, filing, and supervision duties.
Verdict
Lexis+ with Protégé is compelling for organizations that want AI work to remain close to LexisNexis authority, Shepard's analysis, internal knowledge, and professional workflows. Its strongest case is not generic text generation; it is the combination of research content, source traceability, drafting, large-matter analysis, and governance.
The decision still depends on the negotiated package and disciplined review. Verify entitlements, reconcile Vault and retention claims, contract for the required controls, pilot against real work, and measure corrected, professionally accepted output. Citation tooling can shorten verification; it cannot transfer legal responsibility to the software.
