What ChatPDF is
ChatPDF is a document-question-answering service designed for a fast start. Users can upload a file without registration, ask questions in many languages, follow cited pages, save history with an account, organize documents into folders, and chat across multiple files.
The product has expanded beyond its original name. Official pages currently describe support for PDF, Word, PowerPoint, Markdown, and text, plus separate summary, writing, flashcard, slide, and research features. Define which surface and terms apply before treating “ChatPDF” as one unlimited service.
Page references improve verification, not correctness
Clickable references make it easier to inspect an answer. They do not guarantee that the model selected the right passage or preserved its meaning. Ask for a short quote and page, then compare the surrounding text, heading, table, unit, footnote, date, and document version.
Test scanned pages, two-column papers, charts, tables, equations, appendices, images, and contradictory sections. If the system cannot parse an artifact, the safest answer is “not found,” not a plausible reconstruction.
For multi-file chat, require file name and page for every material claim. Watch for a newer policy being combined with an older one, or one company's numbers being attributed to another report. Preserve uploaded versions and a human-approved conclusion.
Sharing and account behavior
ChatPDF can create links for specific documents. Official product material says recipients can view the shared document without seeing the owner's chat. Test the exact link behavior: indexing, expiration, revocation, downloads, duplication, recipient account requirements, and what happens after the owner deletes the source.
No-registration access reduces friction but does not remove data processing. Check browser storage, temporary identifiers, deletion controls, analytics, and whether an anonymous file can be recovered or removed later. For persistent work, use an owned account and test export and deletion before adding sensitive content.
Free, Plus, and product boundaries
ChatPDF's PDF AI page currently says users can analyze up to two documents per day without registration. Plus is promoted as unlimited document analysis with additional features. The public pages reviewed did not expose one stable, detailed self-serve price and complete allowance table for every region and product surface.
“Unlimited” should be tested against fair use, file size, page count, context, questions, multi-file limits, writing, flashcards, slides, and API access. Confirm the checkout currency, monthly or annual commitment, tax, renewal, refund, and cancellation.
The consumer subscription and backend API are different purchasing contexts. Do not assume Plus includes production API rights or higher-volume commercial use.
Backend API limits and architecture
ChatPDF's backend API documentation supports adding a PDF from a public URL or file upload, asking questions, returning page references, streaming, and deleting one or more sources by ID.
Current documentation limits a PDF to 2,000 pages or 32 MB per file. A chat request can include up to six messages; if messages exceed 2,500 OpenAI tokens, older messages are ignored until the request fits. The API is stateless, so the client must send the relevant conversation on every request.
Design for those constraints. Store source IDs securely, validate URLs to avoid unintended document ingestion, restrict file types and size, scan uploads, rate-limit users, and call the deletion endpoint during lifecycle cleanup. Never expose the API key in browser code. Verify commercial terms, logging, provider route, regional processing, and deletion completion before production.
Privacy and security questions
ChatPDF's public product pages say privacy matters, documents are stored securely, and users can delete files and chats. Those statements are useful but less detailed than a current enterprise security document, DPA, subprocessor list, model-training statement, and retention schedule.
During this review, official public pages did not provide enough visible contractual detail to conclude universally that uploads and prompts are never used for training, how long all derived data remains, which model providers receive content, or what enterprise controls apply. Record that gap rather than replacing it with an assumption.
Use public or synthetic files in evaluation. For confidential, personal, licensed, regulated, or unpublished documents, request current privacy and contractual terms covering providers, training, storage, retention, deletion, subprocessors, support access, incident response, and data location.
