What is Pictory?

Pictory is a browser-based AI video production platform. It can turn a script, web URL, PDF, PowerPoint deck, image, audio file or existing recording into a storyboard; match scenes with stock or generated media; add narration and captions; and export a branded video. Its text-based editor also transcribes uploaded footage so users can remove spoken passages, filler words and pauses by editing the transcript.

The product has expanded beyond classic script-to-stock-video automation. Pictory 2.0 adds generated images and video, custom avatars, voice cloning, long-video summaries, document and slide workflows, and professional or team creation. Enterprise also lists Pictory Central for hosted interactive video, chapters, quizzes, clickable calls to action and SCORM export.

Workflow and quality control

Pictory's first draft may select script sentences, divide scenes, choose visuals, summarize a recording and create captions. Every step needs review. A relevant keyword can retrieve a stock clip that is visually attractive but factually wrong; a summary can omit a qualification; transcript deletion can change meaning; and a generated scene can invent products, locations or people.

Start with a locked source and objective. Compare the generated script to the source paragraph by paragraph, verify all numbers and claims, replace metaphorical or misleading B-roll, correct names and technical terms, and inspect caption safe areas. Review the final render, not only the editor preview. Export SRT, VTT or TXT for accessibility and records, and retain a source-to-scene evidence map for regulated training or customer claims.

Voice quality differs by plan. Starter includes 60 minutes of ElevenLabs voices in 29 languages, Professional 120 and Team 240, while Professional and Team also list unlimited standard voices in seven languages. “Unlimited” does not erase fair use, generation latency or language quality. Pronunciation, acronyms, numbers, emotional tone and translation should be approved by a fluent reviewer.

Current price and three usage pools

Annual Starter is $25 per month billed annually and includes 2,400 export minutes, 5GB storage, one Brand Kit and 1,200 AI credits. Professional is $35 with 7,200 minutes, 20GB, five kits and 12,000 credits. Team is $119 with 21,600 shared minutes, 100GB, ten kits, at least three users and 28,800 credits. Monthly equivalents are $29 with 200 minutes/100 credits, $59 with 600/500, and $199 with 1,800/2,400.

Video minutes count exported duration. Preview, editing and in-account sharing do not deduct them. Annual minutes arrive as a full yearly pool; monthly allowances reset on the first of the month and unused minutes do not roll over. Extra minutes can be purchased. Generative images, video and avatars consume separate AI credits: the pricing examples imply different per-output rates, so forecast the exact mix rather than treating credits as minutes. Premium voice minutes form a third pool.

The free trial lasts 14 days and permits three projects. Paid plans do not offer refunds, though they can be cancelled before renewal. This makes a representative trial important: test the real input length, language, stock requirements, brand workflow, generation mix and export volume.

Rights, stock assets, avatars and voices

Pictory says customers retain ownership of uploaded and generated Customer Content and that it will not use Customer Content to train general AI/ML models unless expressly agreed in writing. It receives a limited operational license and may use non-identifiable aggregated material to improve or develop services. Review the contract if “non-identifiable” transformations are material to your policy.

Third-party stock has a limited license only inside Pictory-created content. Terms prohibit standalone reuse, printed or retail products, reusable templates, logos/trademarks, file sharing and AI training. Keep proof of plan, source asset and finished composition; automated copyright claims can still occur, and a library item can later become unavailable for new work.

Custom avatar and voice cloning require the person themselves or clear written legal consent. Pictory may require a scripted consent recording and share it with verification subprocessors. Do not clone minors, unapproved public figures or people for deceptive events, endorsements, harassment or fraud. Define the allowed scripts, channels, brands, regions, duration, revocation and deletion, and disclose synthetic presenters.

Privacy, security, storage and cancellation

Pictory's privacy page says self-service production data is processed and hosted in the United States. Pricing displays SOC 2, ISO 27001 and GDPR claims, but buyers should obtain the actual reports, DPA, subprocessors, regions, retention, backup, deletion and incident terms for their plan. Uploaded recordings and documents may contain employee, learner, customer, health or confidential data; minimize and redact before upload.

Storage ranges from 5GB to 100GB before custom Enterprise capacity. Do not treat it as an archive. The pricing FAQ says all projects are permanently deleted on cancellation and must be downloaded first. Maintain an external inventory containing masters, source files, licenses, consents, scripts, transcripts, captions, voice assets, brand elements and generation details. Test account deletion and team-member removal before offboarding.

Verdict

Pictory is well suited to high-volume, template-driven video where speed and a broad media/voice toolkit matter more than frame-level control. Its transcript editing and multiple source formats can reduce routine production work, and the 2026 generative layer widens the types of output.

The correct buying model is three-dimensional: exported minutes, generative credits and premium voice minutes, plus storage and seats. Pilot all three, verify every script and visual, keep licenses and consent, export archives before cancellation, and use conventional editing for work that needs precise creative or evidentiary control.

Strengths

  • Converts scripts, URLs, PDFs, PowerPoint, images, audio and recordings into videos, and supports transcript-based editing, highlights, summaries and captions
  • Includes large Getty Images and Storyblocks collections, brand kits, ElevenLabs voices, generative media, avatars, voice cloning, sharing and text exports
  • Annual plans deliver full export-minute and AI-credit pools upfront; Professional and above add broader languages and advanced creation while Team adds collaboration

Limitations

  • Export minutes, AI credits, premium voice minutes, storage, users, brand kits, asset-library size and feature gates are separate constraints
  • AI-selected visuals, summaries, captions, translations, voices and avatars can be inaccurate, generic, misleading, licensed for narrower uses, or culturally inappropriate
  • Paid fees are non-refundable, monthly minutes do not roll over, and projects are permanently deleted on cancellation unless downloaded first

Best for

  • Marketing, learning, internal communications, agencies, educators and creators converting approved written or long-form material into repeatable branded videos
  • Teams needing transcript editing, B-roll, captions, voiceover, brand templates and many exports without a conventional timeline editor for every project
  • Organizations able to clear source rights, verify stock and synthetic media, obtain clone consent, proofread outputs, archive masters and govern team access

Not ideal for

  • Uploading copyrighted articles, client recordings, private documents, faces or voices without rights, or using stock assets as standalone files, logos, templates or AI-training data
  • Editors requiring frame-level compositing, advanced audio mixing, color grading, custom motion graphics, or guaranteed factual/visual precision
  • Buyers who may cancel without first exporting videos, SRT/VTT/TXT, source assets, scripts, brand settings and other required project records

Frequently asked questions

How does Pictory count video minutes?

Minutes are deducted when a video is exported, not while it is previewed, edited or shared inside the account. Monthly plans reset their allowance without rollover; annual plans provide the full yearly export pool upfront. Team minutes are shared. Generative AI uses a separate AI-credit meter, and ElevenLabs voices have separate minute allowances.

How much does Pictory cost?

Current annual equivalents are $25/month for Starter, $35 for Professional and $119 for Team, prepaid yearly; monthly prices are $29, $59 and $199. Storage, export minutes, AI credits, premium voice minutes, brand kits, seats and asset libraries vary. Enterprise is custom and paid subscriptions have no refund.

Can Pictory create a clone of any person?

No. Terms require the uploader to be the depicted/recorded person or hold clear, written, legally binding consent covering the avatar or voice. A mandatory consent recording may verify identity. Cloning minors, unapproved public figures or anyone for fraud, abuse or deceptive deepfakes is prohibited.
