What is Leonardo AI?
Leonardo AI is a creative platform for image generation and editing that also includes video, custom-model, and API workflows. It combines Leonardo's own models with selected third-party models, giving users one interface for different visual tasks. This breadth is useful for experimentation, but it means “Leonardo output” is not one consistent model or cost profile.
The platform can serve game-asset exploration, marketing visuals, character concepts, product-style imagery, social content, and creative prototyping. Its strongest fit is a user who wants to move between prompting, image guidance, canvas-based editing, and model choices without assembling several separate services.
Models, guidance, and Canvas workflows
Leonardo provides image generation with presets, references, quality options, and model selection. The Realtime Canvas and Realtime Generation surfaces support a more interactive loop than submitting isolated prompts. Users can also train personal models on eligible plans, organize outputs in collections, edit images, remove backgrounds, upscale, and access video features.
Model choice affects both creative behavior and economics. First-party models may be eligible for plan features that third-party models are not. A production team should record the exact model, settings, reference assets, and post-processing steps behind every approved output. Estimate a real workload by model and action: initial generations, guidance, edits, upscale operations, video, custom training, and discarded attempts. Confirm token reset, rollover, top-up, cancellation, and team-pool rules. Buyers comparing headline monthly prices without a model mix can reach the wrong cost conclusion.
Public creations, ownership, and privacy
Free and paid workflows have important differences. Leonardo's pricing guidance says free creations are public and that the platform retains broad rights while giving the user a non-exclusive commercial license. Paid subscribers receive private generation and stronger ownership language for their creations, subject to the current terms.
That distinction matters for client work. A commercial-use license does not make a public generation confidential, and ownership language does not clear third-party rights. Do not upload unreleased products, private photographs, protected characters, or client references until the plan and agreement have been approved.
Review the current privacy policy and the terms linked from Leonardo's pricing page. Canva owns Leonardo, and current legal links or product integrations may route into Canva's policy framework. Organizations should confirm data retention, training or service-improvement use, subprocessors, deletion, access controls, and any team or enterprise commitments applicable to their account.
Alternatives and buying decision
Leonardo is attractive when model choice and several creation modes matter more than a minimal interface. The cost is operational complexity: teams must govern model provenance, tokens, public visibility, and rights.

Inspect faces, hands, logos, text, product geometry, and background continuity at export resolution.
If custom training or uploaded references are part of the workflow, test access, deletion, reuse, and the rights of every contributor before real client data is introduced. Preserve source assets and a generation record outside the workspace. The product earns a place in production when repeatable art direction and correction cost are competitive, not when one lucky output is impressive.
