What is Recraft?
Recraft is a generative design platform for raster images, vectors, icons, illustrations, and branded visual assets. It combines generation with an infinite canvas, editing, background removal, vectorization, style control, and export workflows. An API provides related capabilities for product and batch use.
Its design orientation is the reason to compare it with general image generators. A creator may need an editable vector, a consistent icon family, a controlled palette, or a campaign set rather than a single painterly image. Recraft aims to keep those tasks in one environment, although generated vectors still require professional inspection.
Raster, vector, style, and editing workflow
Users can generate raster or vector assets, create and apply styles, edit parts of an image, expand a canvas, remove backgrounds, and vectorize existing imagery. These tools can support brand exploration, editorial illustration, product graphics, interface assets, and marketing production.
Test vector output in the application that will receive it. Inspect path count, overlapping shapes, clipping masks, gradients, text conversion, transparent areas, color profiles, and how easily another designer can edit the file. A file with an SVG extension is not automatically a clean production asset.
For consistency, evaluate a family rather than one item: several icons with matching stroke logic, a set of illustrations in one palette, or multiple campaign images using the same brand style. Record the number of regenerations and manual corrections required. Style control is valuable only when it reduces measurable downstream repair.

The official Recraft pricing page lists free and paid options. Subscription credits reset on the billing cycle, while separately purchased top-up credits have different expiration behavior. Credit cost depends on the operation and model, including selected external models.
Estimate monthly cost using generation, vectorization, edits, background removal, inpainting, outpainting, upscales, and failed attempts. Team plans also need seat, workspace, privacy, and approval analysis. The API is billed separately according to requests and output types.
The free tier is an evaluation route, not a commercial production plan. Rights differ sharply, so a team should upgrade before generating final commercial assets rather than assuming that a later subscription retroactively changes earlier work.
Free versus paid ownership and training terms
Recraft's current terms of service state that free-tier assets are owned by Recraft, publicly visible, and licensed only for personal, non-commercial use. Paid users own assets they create while subscribed, receive commercial rights, and have private generations. The pricing FAQ says paid assets remain private and under the user's ownership after cancellation.
The same terms restrict using assets to train AI models. They also grant Recraft a service license to inputs and outputs and describe training use as enabled by default with an account setting to opt out. Organizations should review the exact current wording and configure the account before uploading proprietary references.
Read the privacy policy for retention, subprocessors, deletion, and international processing. A paid ownership provision does not clear third-party trademarks, people, copyrighted inputs, or legal disclosure duties.
API and alternatives
Recraft's API covers image and vector generation, editing, background removal, inpainting, outpainting, and batch processing. Production integrations need authentication controls, retry logic, moderation, cost limits, provenance records, and a clear plan for failed or unsafe outputs.

A brand-asset benchmark
Create a controlled set rather than one illustration: a hero raster, an icon family, a simple vector mark, two product graphics, and several aspect ratios. Define palette, line weight, negative space, typography area, and unacceptable deviations before generation. Record the selected model, style settings, references, credits, failed attempts, edits, vector cleanup, and total approval time.
Inspect SVG paths, masks, transparency, small-size legibility, color values, text, product geometry, and consistency between assets. Open exports in the team's normal design software and ask a second designer to make a precise revision. An asset is not production-ready if it only looks correct inside the preview or if generated vectors require a complete redraw.
Run the pilot on the plan intended for production because free and paid rights differ materially. Verify privacy, public visibility, ownership, training settings, reference rights, and API terms before adding brand or client material. Archive source inputs, account tier, generation date, exports, and human edits. This evidence is especially important when the same asset may later appear in packaging, advertising, templates, or a design system.
